Trespassing and outdoor recreation safety

When snowmobiling stay on established trails. You need permission from a land owner to ride on private property. Remember, it is illegal to operate an ATV or snowmobile without proper safety gear.

Dredging or filling of wetlands

MNR offers a “Landowner Contact Program” to inform landowners about significant features on their properties. It also offers advice on techniques and assistance available to enhance conservation efforts.

Destruction of fisheries habitat

Changing your shoreline by adding or enlarging a beach may harm fish habitat.

Damming a creek or diverting a stream

Keeping our natural environment and fish habitat healthy is important to MNR. Before you begin any stream or creek alterations you must apply for a work permit.

Illegal fishing techniques and illegal sale of fish and wildlife

You can only fish one line in the water at a time. If you are ice-fishing two lines are allowed. Only catch what you plan to consume because you cannot sell game fish you have caught.

Possession of (non-game) wildlife for sale to pet shops or restaurants

It is illegal, under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, to offer for sale any wildlife species.

Burning garbage or debris

Summer brings extremely dry conditions and the risk of forest fires. Between April 1st and October 31st, a permit from MNR is required.

Possession of wildlife

Wild animals should not be kept as domestic pets. Without specialized care, most wildlife will die if taken from their natural habitat.
